Clyde Mashburn

Hello,

Just wanted to thank you for putting on your site info about Clyde Mashburn. I am a biographer working on the story of a man who took his sons to learn ham radio from Clyde while they lived in Daytona in the 1960s.
It was wonderful to find a few sentences about Mashburn.
If anyone else has more info on him, I’d like to have it, such as when he died.
Many thanks,

More FD 2008 Feedback

by Paul Milward, AB4PM

Over 25 Hams from DBARA/DB-CERT operated FD from the Daytona Beach (FL) EOC. We operated 2 Rigs (2F NFL / KI4LBF) plus a GOTA Station. The Phone/CW rig utilized the permanently installed multi-band sloping dipole. We made over 275 contacts (100+ CW / 150+ phone).

The 2nd rig, with a Buddiepole tuned for 20m & 40m in the horizontal (bands were changed at dusk & dawn), was used exclusively for psk31. We made over 110 contacts, woo hoo! The Buddiepole performed flawlessly, furthest station was in Hawaii.

The GOTA rig was used exclusively on 10m. We had 3 <12YO kids operating and made about 10 contacts on Saturday before the band went out. A dedicated Buddipole in horizontal position was used.

Sunday morning one of the OP’s 11 YO daughter wanted to try her hand at 10m. So we fired up the rig and heard only a few weak stations. I suggested that we re-orient the 10m dipole to vertical orientation. So 2 of us climbed to the roof and re-oriented the Buddiepole.

The Buddiepole was oriented red side up and vertical, black side down about 30 degrees from vertical. We climbed down and fired up the rig. Wow 2 to 3 S units better signals. The young lady happily completed about 20 calls over the next 3 hours.

Both Buddiepoles were placed on the flat rooftop of the single story portion of the Police Station Building. They were each guyed at 3 points with long buddieMasts extended about 14 feet. Coil adjustment of the 20/40M Buddiepole was accomplished in about 10 minutes each time. Re orientation of the 10m Buddiepole also was accomplished in less that 10 minutes. Both Buddiepoles weather a severe thunderstorm with 30-40mph winds on Saturday afternoon. We just took a quick visual after the storm passed, performed a SWR check with the antenna analyzer and went right back operating.

All of us enjoyed FD. We look forward to another joint FD OP next year at the DBPD EOC. It should be really fun. The new Station House will open in November 2008. Listen for KI4LBF on FD 2009.

Serving Daytona Beach since 2005

June 14, 2008

The Daytona Beach CERT Amateur Radio Club, Inc., cordially invites you to observe our participation in the American Radio Relay League’s annual “Field Day”, on Saturday, June 28th, and Sunday June 29th, 2008.  This year’s event will be staged at the Daytona Beach Emergency Operations Center, located in the Police Department at 990 Orange Avenue in Daytona Beach. The event will start at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, and continue uninterrupted through Sunday, at 2:00 p.m. (24 hours of operation).  Complementary beverages will be on site, as well as a visitor’s booth with information; a radio station will be available for you to “try out ham radio”.

Amateur Radio operators operate in partnership with DHS/FEMA, the State of Florida Department of Emergency Management, the Volusia County Department of Emergency Management, the Daytona Beach Emergency Management Unit, and the American Red Cross.

We will be simulating emergency field conditions in an EOC as a “practice” to gain expertise and knowledge, should the Volusia County area sustain any communications interruption.  As you may remember during Hurricanes Andrew and Katrina, Ham Operators were the only dependable communications link for the first several days; locally, area hams provided emergency communications during the1998 Wildfires in Volusia and Flagler counties, and served during the many hurricanes that struck in 2004.  President Bush operated a local ham station during his visit to Volusia a few years ago and lauded the efforts of ham radio volunteers as an important facet of homeland emergency preparedness.

Please feel free to stop by and allow us to demonstrate our capabilities and familiarize you with our ability to support the community.  We will also be sending messages via Amateur Radio free of charge to anyone in the world; the only information required is a name, address, City/State, Zip Code, and telephone number.

I hope you can find the time to visit us at the City EOC in Daytona Beach.

Best regards

Stephen W. Szabo WB4OMM
