History of HamBone College

"when you pass the test you have just begun the journey"

Many years ago there was a handicapped Amateur Radio Operator by the name of Clyde Mashburn, W4SDR. Now there are a lot of folks that would say Clyde was a crusty old man and they might b e right.  But Clyde had a very fond love of the hobby so he became an "Elmer!"  Elmer is ham speak for what is actually a "mentor" or a teacher.  He had a little home on South Halifax Drive in Daytona Beach with a front porch and a sky full of wire antenna's.  His little school house became known as Clyde's HamBone College which evolved into HamBone College and like all of us the "Master Time Keeper" saw that Clyde had fulfilled his task of making a large quantity of quality hams and called upon him to become the Chief Operator of his ham shack in the havens.

Over the years various teams of local hams have banded together and formed up mentoring teams and resurrected HamBone College for short and long periods of time.  In 2006 the leadership of DBARA decided it was time for HamBone College to be resurrected one more time as a source of training or mentoring new hams into the hobby and the club itself.  The  re-energized HamBone College  re-launched itself in 2007.

In January 2008 Jeff Mathews, KG4DHZ, established a web site exclusively for the use of students enrolled in any HamBone College class in progress.  Another plus for the students of today is the establishment of a Yahoo Group exclusively for students currently enrolled in any HamBone College class in progress. The Yahoo Group e-mail program is monitored by Frank Haas, KB4T.
