Ham needs an Elmer Define the word -- Elmer? In ham radio land the word or name Elmer is the label that got tagged on to that wonderful guy that knew how to fix your broke antenna, make your rig radiate RF, get rid of your RFI in the neighbor's stereo or that terrible case of TVI that is keeping you off the air. He or She are the one's that show up for the antenna raising or taking down without being asked or asking for anything in return. Elmer's are the real unsung hero's of the amateur radio hobby and everyone can be an "Elmer" because we are good at something from napping to fixing. There is no better reward then the helping of someone that is at a disadvantage on a project, tasking or chore that could use a helping hand to overcome a hurdle and you know you can do it. Volunteering to be a "Elmer" to someone is great even if you don't really know the answer also then you both learn and grow. It makes you better then the person that knew and did not want to be bothered.
DBARA has a group of these hero's that can help you out in your hour of need. If you have a specialty like "squirrel fishing" let us know and we can put your specialty on the list so you to can get on the list too. | Hambone College Leader - John Locicero, K4TUG | | Extra Class Teacher - Frank Haas, KB4T | | General Class Teacher - "Bill" Schwartz, WS1C | | Technician Class Teacher - Joe Sanders, K2SAN | | Volunteer Examiner (VE) Leader - Paul Milward, AB4PM | | Portable Operations - Paul Milward, AB4PM/P | | Antenna Team Leader - David "Sparky" Lammers. Return to Top of Page Bob, I found you on the internet. I am Charles Adams, KD4NAY. I need help to check/improve the ground system on my 37 ft. sail boat. I have an Icom 710, with an automatic antenna tuner connected to the boats, back stay antenna. I recently attempted adding some copper foil in the bilges to improve transmission. Now all I can hear is noise. Do you know anyone I could hire to check out my boats system and do the necessary repairs/modifications ? Thank you, Charles Adams, New Smyrna Beach, FL chasadms@msn.com 01.04.2008 Update - I had lunch with Bill Schwartz, WS1C, today and he said that he had offered Mr. Adams several avenues to approach the situation from and that they spent almost an hour on the telephone working out some test ventures to try before considering the next attack plan. - Bob George, I want to thank you again for meeting me at Freedom II and giving me the guidance you did. I have ordered some GTO-15 wire so that we can conduct further tests. I'll call you as soon as it arrives. Charles Thanks also to Bob, Bud, Bill and Ken for their advice.
